Toronto's Small Business Renaissance: $3.3 Million Boost from the City!
🏙️🌟 The City of Toronto is injecting a significant $3.3 million into revitalizing the local small business community. This initiative promises to re-energize main streets and support small businesses’ recovery and growth journey.
✂️ Clippings
Diverse Funding Pool: The funding includes $1.9 million for non-profits and Business Improvement Areas (BIAs) through the Main Street Innovation Fund (MIF) and the Transit Expansion Construction Mitigation Grant (CMGP), along with $1.4 million for the Commercial Space Rehabilitation Grant Program (CSRG) to support retail space renovations.
Innovative and Adaptive Support: The Main Street Innovation Fund offers non-repayable contributions of up to $100,000 for projects that present creative solutions to business challenges, potentially serving as models for other communities.
Construction Impact Mitigation: The CMGP, with a pool of up to $700,000, helps BIAs and business associations develop initiatives to lessen the impact of construction on local businesses. Applications for this program open in January 2024.
Revitalizing Vacant Spaces: The CSRG program offers up to 50% matching funding for improving vacant or at-risk commercial spaces, focusing on health and accessibility upgrades, with a maximum grant of $24,000.
Comprehensive Government Support: Backed by the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario, this initiative includes up to $18 million for inclusive and sustainable economic recovery projects.
Additional Resources: Small businesses in Toronto also benefit from various support mechanisms, including free business webinars, digital transformation assistance, tax reductions for small business properties, and grant programs for facade improvement and street art.
This bold move by Toronto marks a significant effort towards rejuvenating its local business landscape, fostering innovation, and building a more robust, resilient small business community. It's an investment in the heart and soul of Toronto's bustling streets. 🏢💼🌆
Canadians can expect 'lots of bargain options' for winter travel, says WestJet CEO
🌍✈️ Get ready for a winter wonderland of travel deals, Canada! WestJet's CEO, Alexis von Hoensbroech, announces a flurry of good news for those with wanderlust - affordable airfares are on the horizon for this winter and next summer! ❄️💸
✂️ Clippings
More Deals on the Way: With a balance between supply and demand and improved productivity in the airline industry, Canadian travellers can look forward to various bargain options for air travel in the upcoming winter and summer seasons.
The Pandemic Effect: After the pandemic, airfares soared due to high demand and limited capacity, especially for international travel. As this pent-up demand begins to ease, airfares are also declining, with a notable drop compared to last year.
Strategic Shift to Western Canada and Leisure Travel: WestJet is focusing more on Western Canada and expanding its leisure travel offerings, including sun destinations, partly due to its acquisition of Sunwing. This move is a return to WestJet's roots and strengths.
Selective Market Engagement: The airline is concentrating on markets with a competitive edge, leading to the suspension of some regional routes within Eastern Canada, like the Toronto to Montreal service, for the winter.
Cautious Approach to International Expansion: Post-pandemic, WestJet has recalibrated its approach to intercontinental flights, taking a more cautious stance and focusing its fleet on flights to Europe, Asia, and southern destinations depending on the season.
It looks like it's time to dust off those luggage bags and start planning some budget-friendly getaways. Whether you dream of a tropical escape or a snowy adventure, WestJet's new strategy might have the perfect deal for you! 🛄🌴🏔️

Let it snow!
Ontario is getting some snow and we all know that means plan extra time for travel in Canadian culture. Here’s a list of road closures and TTC information.
Look out. Updated #ONstorm snowfall accumulation projections. Some of the snowbelt areas could see 20-40 cm of snow, with some very localized areas potentially seeing even more. Consider postponing non-essential travel. Road closures are possible. #ONwxtheweathernetwork.com/en/news/weathe…

🧠 Today We Learned: JFK's father, Joseph Kennedy, made much of his fortune through insider trading. FDR later made him chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission. When asked why he appointed a crook, FDR replied, "Set a thief to catch a thief." Kennedy proceeded to outlaw the practices that made him rich.
