WeWork Emerges From Bankruptcy
WeWork, the co-working space giant, is officially out of bankruptcy. Here's a quick recap:
Debt-Free Future: WeWork's restructuring plan eliminates a whopping $4 billion in debt.
Reduced Footprint: The company renegotiated rent and cancelled leases, shrinking its future locations by a third. Going forward, expect to see 337 WeWork spaces.
New Ownership: A group of lenders and real estate tech firm Yardi Systems now controls WeWork.
SoftBank Stays On: Despite a massive drop in valuation (from $47 billion to $750 million), WeWork's original major investor, SoftBank, retains a stake in the company.
Why this matters: Millennials are a generation known for embracing flexible work arrangements. WeWork's return, with a leaner structure and potentially more competitive pricing, could be a sign of a comeback for co-working spaces.
Alcohol Sales Coming to Ontario Convenience Stores
While the announcement was made back in December, Ontario is speeding things up with an accelerated timeline. Here's a quick breakdown:
Earlier Access: Beer, wine, and ready-to-drink cocktails are coming to convenience stores and some supermarkets as early as September 4th (originally planned for 2026).
More Choice: You'll have way more options for buying alcohol, including any size beer pack (finally!). Stores can also set their own prices (with minimums set by the province).
The Beer Store Buyout: The province is paying up to $225 million to compensate The Beer Store for lost sales due to the accelerated timeline.
LCBO Stays Strong: The LCBO will remain the only place to buy high-alcohol beverages and the sole wholesaler of alcohol in the province.
Why this matters: This move means easier access to your favourite drinks, potentially at more competitive prices. However, health experts warn about increased alcohol consumption due to easier access.
